Stardust safed itself twice
On July 18 and 30, the U.S. space probe Stardust entered safe mode. In both cases, it was successfully revived. Other events of July and August are reported. |
NEAR corrects its trajectory
The NEAR probe continues to approach asteroid Eros. Trajectory correction made on August 12 put the spacecraft on course for Eros encounter February 14. Mission events in April through August are reviewed. |
Next stop at Jupiter
The Cassini probe accelerated itself in Earth flyby on August 18, making no harm with its plutonium power generators. Cassini goes to Saturn via Jupiter. |
Deep Space 1 will go farther
A follow-on to Braille flyby made July 29 by the Deep Space 1 experimental probe. NASA agreed to fund DS1 extended mission featuring study of the Wilson-Harrington object in January 2001 and comet Borelli in September 2001. |
MPL: We'll land next to South Pole
The landing site for U.S. Mars Polar Lander probe was announced August 25, and trajectory correction maneuver fulfiled on September 1. The landing is scheduled for December 3. |
Pioneer 10 celebrates jubilee
In July, Pioneer 10 passed 10,000 days mark in its mission. Operations will continue till this September or maybe July 2000. |
Britain found money for Beagle 2
In the new U.K. Space Strategy 1999-2001 unveiled August 3, 5 million pounds are devoted to the development of the Beagle 2 Mars lander. Private and university funds are expected to cover the full cost of development. |
